The Waterloo Community Foundation has several founding tenets that distinguish its purpose:

  • Funds will always be directed by the person making the donation with the capability to remove those funds if the Foundation has not invested them in an appropriate manner.
  • Initially, there will be no front-end fees assessed.
  • There is no minimum contribution; every gift will be received with joy.
  • The operational structure will be purposely lean to maximize the amount of funds being directed to the intended charitable organizations, while minimizing overhead expenses.
  • All donor funds will be invested in local financial institutions.
  • The Foundation will be governed by a 14-member board consisting of persons who live and/or work in Waterloo
  • The fundamental beneficiaries of this Foundation will be organizations and charities in Waterloo or significantly serving Waterloo and its citizens.
  • Funds are intended to enhance our community by awarding grants to qualified non-profits for general support, capacity building grants, project support, endowments, innovation grants, scholarships, and challenge/match grants;
  • The Foundation will build partnerships with funded organizations and work with other philanthropic organizations that share our beliefs to determine how we can most effectively work together and build our community.
  • The Foundation will build relationships with donors that result in a broad portfolio of donor-advised funds.
